What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is a decentralized digital asset recorded on a public blockchain. Its price moves continuously because buyers and sellers trade it across global venues, and those prices can differ between exchanges and currencies.

Why the GBP price changes

A GBP Bitcoin price combines the global Bitcoin market with the pound exchange rate. Liquidity, exchange spreads, macro news, token flows, and market sentiment can all affect the quoted price.

What market cap means

Market cap is the current price multiplied by circulating supply. It is useful for comparing asset scale, but it is not the amount of cash invested in the asset and it does not guarantee liquidity.

What the blockchain records

The Bitcoin blockchain is a shared transaction history maintained by a distributed network. Transactions are grouped into blocks and miners compete to add the next valid block. The ledger can show that value moved between addresses, but an address does not automatically reveal the identity of the person controlling it.

Bitcoin ownership and custody

Control comes from private keys. A hosted exchange can manage those keys for a customer, while a self-custody wallet places that responsibility on the holder. Losing access credentials, approving a scam transaction, or sending funds to the wrong address can cause permanent loss. Compare custody arrangements, withdrawal rules, security controls, and fees before using any service.

How to read a Bitcoin price page

Check the quote currency, timestamp, data source, and trading venue. A displayed price is a market reference, not a guaranteed execution price. The amount available near the quoted price, the spread between bids and asks, and transaction fees can all change the final result.
