What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is a decentralized digital asset recorded on a public blockchain. Its price moves continuously because buyers and sellers trade it across global venues, and those prices can differ between exchanges and currencies.
Why the GBP price changes
A GBP Bitcoin price combines the global Bitcoin market with the pound exchange rate. Liquidity, exchange spreads, macro news, token flows, and market sentiment can all affect the quoted price.
What market cap means
Market cap is the current price multiplied by circulating supply. It is useful for comparing asset scale, but it is not the amount of cash invested in the asset and it does not guarantee liquidity.
What the blockchain records
The Bitcoin blockchain is a shared transaction history maintained by a distributed network. Transactions are grouped into blocks and miners compete to add the next valid block. Losing access credentials, approving a scam transaction, or sending funds to the wrong address can cause permanent loss. Compare custody arrangements, withdrawal rules, security controls, and fees before using any service.
How to read a Bitcoin price page
Check the quote currency, timestamp, data source, and trading venue. A displayed price is a market reference, not a guaranteed execution price. The amount available near the quoted price, the spread between bids and asks, and transaction fees can all change the final result.
A practical research checklist
- Separate the asset's mechanics from claims about its future price.
- Compare multiple sources and confirm when market data was last refreshed.
- Understand who controls the private keys and how account recovery works.
- Review fees, spreads, withdrawal limits, and UK tax implications independently.
- Never treat historical returns or social-media attention as a guarantee.
